Cartier has crafted its En Équilibre collection like a book, in distinct chapters that echo, assemble, and complement each other around a narrative thread carried by the style and expertise of the house.
In Balance, the third and final chapter of which was unveiled last week in Paris during Haute Couture Week, questions the laws of harmony: how to reconcile opposing forces, how to mitigate the most pressing antinomies to achieve perfect balance? With this Chapter 3, full and empty spaces harmoniously unite, extravagant chromatic harmonies explode alongside lines of absolute purity, asymmetries converse with architecture, volumes unfold with wild delicacy. "Creating the obviousness of the line through its sobriety, that's the paradox of sophisticated simplicity," emphasizes Jacqueline Karachi, creative director of high jewelry. Any form of disagreement thus fades to give way to the obvious. An obviousness that is wonderfully illustrated by the Ondora necklace, punctuated by an abundant association of balls and cabochons of chrysoprase whose milky green contrasts with the brilliance of square- and brilliant-cut diamonds, highlighted by balls of spinels gathered in a waving pendant. The balance of this chromatic encounter is not new as multiple examples can be observed in Cartier's history, from the early 20th century. To instill the dynamic of light and symmetry in the Splendea necklace, Cartier has managed to assemble 34 meticulously matched diamonds. "The real challenge of our high jewelry professions lies in the technical (re)transcription of an aesthetic intention," explains Alexa Abitbol, director of the high jewelry department. "Everything rests on the accuracy and mastery of our craftsmen who bring to life exceptional pieces charged with emotion."
