Exploited by the pre-Colombian peoples as early as 400 BC, and then coveted by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, it long supplied royal courts with gems of unparalleled quality. After a long period of dormancy in the 19th century, the site is now experiencing a second life. Founded in 2009, Muzo Emerald Colombia has set out to reinvent the way emeralds are produced and marketed. The company has set itself a dual mission: to preserve historical know-how while placing ethics at the heart of its operations. Each stone is now tracked from its extraction to its cut thanks to an ISO 9001-certified traceability system.
