Jewelry, a New "Coffee Table Book"
Phaidon Press publishes Jewelry, a work created under the guidance of Melanie Grant, an author and curator based in London specializing in luxury and the relationships between art, jewelry, and economics, and former executive director of the Responsible Jewellery Council.
Following her first book Coveted (2020), the author – supported by expert contributors – presents a veritable encyclopedia of jewelry creation. Spanning over 300 richly illustrated pages, the book traverses two centuries of history and brings together 300 independent creators, major maisons , and artists who have shaped the very concept of jewelry, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, from Suzanne Belperron to Victoire de Castellane. Beyond this, and in a very interesting way from a societal perspective, it mentions stars and personalities who have influenced the industry and reinvented, for example, the wearing of pieces they own (Greta Garbo, The Notorious B.I.G., Madonna) as well as artists from other realms who have collaborated with the maisons through various partnerships. Designed as a journey into the heart of craftsmanship and material, Jewelry transcends the boundaries of luxury to explore jewelry as a work of art. Each piece, photographed in large format, reveals its unique universe: a Graff diamond bracelet, an Azza Fahmy chest necklace, or a hand-sculpted ring by Haroldo Burle Marx. A book that questions the transmission, innovation and responsibility of creators in a profession undergoing significant change. In her foreword, Melanie Grant reminds us that "in the material culture of all societies, jewelry perhaps embodies a form of expression of the most enduring freedom".
