HIGH JEWELRY - Fred, the Golden Hour
It would seem that certain gems bide their time. Discovered in 1977, the Golden Sun changed hands even before a jeweler had the chance to set it, then vanished for forty-four long years.
Valérie Samuel, Artistic Director of Fred, acquired it in 2021. It is around this extraordinary yellow diamond of over 100 carats that Fred concludes, on the occasion of its 90th anniversary, the trilogy Monsieur Fred : 15 pieces divided into five sets that unfold a narrative based on the course of the sun over the French Riviera during an entire day, from the blue of the night to the gold of the golden hour . Everything begins in the blue. Moonlight Reflection evokes a gala night in Cannes, when the water reflects the last stars. A necklace brings together three tanzanites totaling more than 63 carats, two of which detach into brooches, offering four ways to wear a single piece of jewelry. Then the sky lightens with Promising Dawn , inspired by the green flash, that burst of light the horizon releases a fraction of a second before sunrise, watched from the village of Èze, perched above the Mediterranean. The master brooch of the set translates this phenomenon through a marquetry of Australian opals, which radiate around Colombian emeralds. A ring echoes this duo of stones, in two fans that unfold on either side of an emerald cabochon. The sun finally rises. Crystalline Joy takes on the color of the water at the first light of day and comes in a choker, bracelet, and cocktail ring each featuring a cushion-cut tourmaline at their center. As the hours pass, the light turns to gold. Blooming Senses is inspired by the hills of Grasse and their mimosas, where Fred and Thérèse Samuel visited during their honeymoon: each pompon of Sri Lankan yellow sapphires is encircled by a collar of beaded gold. 890 hours of workshop time for this single bouquet. Finally comes the moment everyone has been waiting for, the golden hour with the famous Golden Sun at the center of a vast pointed scarf breastplate, where over a thousand diamonds extend it in a cascade.
