HIGH JEWELRY - Dior's Daydream
Victoire de Castellane is not satisfied with the colors that nature offers, she invents her own. For Diorissima, her new high jewelry collection unveiled in Venice, the artistic director of Dior Joaillerie layers thin slices of stone, an opal on a chrysoprase, to create shades that no single gem could possibly produce.
One-hundred-and-forty-one creations composed of necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, earcuffs, and brooches are unveiled in three dream worlds. The first is a lush garden planted with clovers, clusters of fruit, and wisteria: the eponymous sautoir spills over 4,000 stones in a cascade, held by 12 pink spinels. The second immerses us underwater, in a world populated by corals, fish, and bubbles, where fine lines of white gold lacquered in tropical blues sketch a reef. The third elevates us towards the sky, where suns, eclipses, and "happy" clouds radiate: a pair of earrings makes the sun rise, a yellow diamond encircled by pearls, against a sky of turquoise and lacquer. Behind this abundance, an obsession: color. The technique of the "doublet", this stacking of stones, combined with Dior's signature lacquer, plays with opacity and transparency to enhance its intensity. The rest is a matter of collage: Victoire de Castellane cuts, juxtaposes, and assembles the gems like a visual artist. Some pieces evoke a lucky charm, such as the Lucky Flowers necklace with clover leaves. A nod to Christian Dior's superstitions. Because behind the whimsy lies an intention: joy. The designer describes her jewelry as little living creatures, odes to life gathered in a sort of paradise.
