Originating in the 1920s, during the American Prohibition era, the cocktail ring was a manifesto worn on the hand. While alcohol went underground, consumed at illegal speakeasies, women flaunted their independence for all to see. Bold and flamboyant, with a center stone often in excess of three carats, the cocktail ring captured the light, and attention. Then in the 1960s, everything changed. Art, fashion and society were swept along by the same energy and optimism. Led by the likes of Andy Warhol, rules were shattered, color took center-stage, the spectacular returned. At the forefront of this exciting new world was Piaget. By the 1970s, Piaget Society was partying hard. This was also an era of unprecedented mastery of colored stones and Piaget blazed a trail, becoming one of the first to include ornamental stones in high jewelry. Its cuffs, unmatched to this day, are testament to craftsmanship and expertise that transform matter into movement FREEDOM AND JOY In 2010 Stéphanie Sivrière, already Piaget’s creative director, unveiled her first Cocktail collection. Dazzlingly literal, it captured the language of mixology in figurative pieces that included bejeweled martini glasses, sculpted olives, lemon garnish set with fine stones, even a diamond-studded straw. A creative celebration of joy and freedom, it was an instant hit. Translucent rock crystal mimics an ice cube, yellow sapphire evokes a twist of lemon, amethyst beads become grapes while sparkling fruity shades–lychee, citrus, mint–come to life in tourmalines, turquoise and garnets.
