To celebrate the 60th anniversary of its Bird on a Rock brooch, Tiffany & Co. is thinking big. The New York-based Maison has just acquired a raw kunzite of 7,500 carats, a lilac treasure discovered in Mozambique over 25 years ago.
With a remarkable natural brilliance, this stone will be cut into 10 unique gems, ready to flutter the wings of the most famous bird in high-end jewelry. Created in 1965 by Jean Schlumberger, Bird on a Rock embodies the whimsical and poetic spirit of Tiffany: a small bird perched on a precious stone, as if suspended in a moment of grace. For this anniversary edition, a select group of privileged clients will have the honor of personalizing their own kunzites, invited to participate in the cutting process alongside Tiffany & Co's renowned gemologists. This is a way to honor both the maison 's craftsmanship and the exceptional history of this still little-known gem. Long shunned by purists in favor of diamonds, colored gemstones are making their way to the forefront. Kunzite, with its myriad shades of pink, is the perfect illustration. It is also known for its soothing virtues: it is said to promote serenity and self-love, adding a touch of soul to its brilliance. Named in honor of Dr. George Frederick Kunz, the first chief gemologist of Tiffany & Co., this spectacular stone symbolizes the history and innovation of the maison.
